Mum sparks fury for admitting to tanning newborn

A young mother split the internet in half when she shared the shocking news on social media that she was self-tanning her four-month-old son.

In a clip posted to her TikTok, the 21-year-old could be seen holding her baby, with the text “when everyone is telling me to stop self-tanning my baby but the loving tan employees have families to feed” across the screen.

The video hit viral heights, gaining over 1 million views along with its varied - and passionate - response.

Many were quick to voice their outrage at the young mum and her “selfish” move, calling into question the health risks that such a tanning process might pose to Kylen Suttner’s son, Suede.

“Gosh, those chemicals can hurt a little one's skin,” one dismayed user wrote. “Their skin is so sensitive when they're babies.”

“Disgusting!” another declared. “So horrible.”

One was concerned that Suede was going to “grow up thinking he isn’t good enough naturally, especially to the one person who would love him unconditionally”.

“Why does a baby need a fake tan... so unnecessary,” someone else said.

Meanwhile, another just wanted to know “is this a joke, I can't tell?"

Others seemed of the opinion that it was, with some even replying to similar questioning comments to share that the baby reportedly had jaundice, and this was his mother’s way of making light of the situation.

And it turns out that that was exactly the case.

As criticism continued online, heating up as the story blew up across news outlets, Kylen made the confirmation with The Post that it had all been a joke.

“He had jaundice and looked really tan when he was born,” she explained to the outlet. “Everyone commented on his colour, so I decided to make a joke about it.

“I would never actually use self tanner on my baby.

“I feel like most people understood it was a joke. But the few who didn’t were appalled that I would self tan my baby.”

For those who understood the truth of the situation, it was an opportunity to get in on the fun with Kylen, with many making the announcement that this would be “me as a mum” too.

“I love this,” one said. “I wish I had his skin colour.”

“You gotta keep the tan up,” came one joke, referencing a popular Family Guy meme, “it’s a lifestyle Brian”.

“So funny to me that people think you’re being Fr [for real],” another shared.

Images: TikTok

Happy wife, happy life? A harmonious relationship is the responsibility of both partners

Relationships play a key role in people’s happiness. There are scholars who study how people maintain good quality relationships and the challenges they face.

Some challenges are beyond people’s control, including financial, familial and health stressors — however, there are things people can control to make their relationships stronger.

For instance, people can avoid escalating conflict, criticizing a partner or acting too jealous. They can also do positive things in the relationship in the form of gratitude, laughter, sharing good news and experiencing new things together.

Given that there are many needs to be juggled within and outside relationships, people have to decide what to focus on. In other words, to manage their lives, it is good for people to assess how things are going in various domains of their life by asking questions like: “Is my relationship satisfying? Could I be doing more to make it more satisfying?”

Women as barometers

There is a view among laypeople and relationship researchers that women are the “barometers” of relationships — that is, women’s judgments about their relationships are more predictive than men’s of future relationship satisfaction.

There are several origins of this view including an evolutionary perspective that women have adapted a special ability that make them better able to sense when things are off or going well in relationships.

Another explanation relates to gender roles and the idea that women serve the primary role in tending to relationships.

The barometer hypothesis is captured by the popular saying “Happy wife, happy life,” but does the research support it?

Testing the truth

As a professor of social psychology at Carleton University and researcher who studies happiness in relationships, I was part of an international team of researchers led by University of Alberta professor of family science and couples researcher Matthew Johnson that analyzed more than 50,000 relationship-satisfaction reports to examine the validity of the old adage “happy wife, happy life.”

More specifically, in one study, a team of us recruited over 900 mixed-gender couples from the community and tracked their relationship satisfaction on a daily basis over three weeks. In another study, over 3,000 mixed-gender couples were assessed annually across five years.

More broadly, we found that changes in relationship satisfaction today were linked to how satisfied people felt down the road. In other words, if a person feels higher-than-usual relationship satisfaction, the feeling seems to carry over into the next day and year.

We also found that men’s and women’s relationship satisfaction ratings were equally strong predictors of their own, and their partner’s, relationship satisfaction reported the next day and the next year. That is, women’s judgements were not uniquely predictive of the future state of the relationship; women’s and men’s current ratings of relationship satisfaction had similar predictive effects.

Satisfying relationships

People’s relationship satisfaction levels change over time. It is important for couples to reflect and be aware of how things are going in their relationship and take stock and act on it.

For instance, if things are going well in the relationship, people should double down on that so they can reap more rewards into the future. So if a couple just had a fun date night, rather than take a break, the couple should be looking for more opportunities to bond together.

On the other hand, if a relationship is not going well, for instance, arguments are frequently escalating or the spark has fizzled, it is time to make some changes to alter the course of the relationship satisfaction path.

‘Happy house, happy spouse’

Our results imply that maintaining a relationship is a shared responsibility. This underscores the idea that partners influence one another and jointly shape romantic relationship satisfaction.

Taken together, a more fitting way to describe the role of gender and relationship satisfaction predictions is “happy spouse, happy house.”

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Image: Shutterstock

The text message that sparked fury among Wimbledon stars

Harmony Tan pulled out of the Wimbledon doubles tournament on Wednesday the 29th of June. This comes just hours after stunning Serena Williams, leaving her partner “sad, disappointed and angry”.

The French player was scheduled to play women’s doubles with Tamara Korpatsch but withdrew due to a thigh injury. She had sent her would-be teammate a text message to break the bad news.

“She just texted me this morning,” a furious Korpatsch wrote on Instagram. “Let me wait here 1 hour (alone on the court) before the match started. I’m very sad, disappointed and also very angry that I can’t play my 1st Doubles Grand Slam.

“It’s really not fair for me. I didn’t deserve that. She asked me before the tournament if I wanna play doubles and I said yes. I didn’t ask her, she asked me!

“If you’re broken after a 3h match the day before, you can’t play professional. That’s my opinion.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Tamara Korpatsch (@tami.korpatsch)

Korpatsch included a series of critical hashtags in her post, including “unsportsmanlike”, “unfair” and “mad”.

Tan recorded the biggest win of her career with a three-set triumph over Williams on Wednesday the 29th of June.

Playing her first ever match at Wimbledon and only her ninth grand slam match overall, Tan secured a dramatic 7-5 1-6 7-6 (10-7) victory.

“When I first saw the draw, I was really scared. There’s definitely a lot of motivation to get better and play at home,” the 40-year-old said.

Williams refused to speculate on whether or not she will be back at Wimbledon in 2023, as doubts had been growing about whether Williams would return to the sport after dropping from number one to 1204th in the rankings after taking time off to recover from an injury.

Image: Instagram

Man’s skin ruined after tanning injection disaster

Before a much anticipated holiday to Spain, 28-year-old Dylan Wright wanted to boost his golden tan.

To get the glow he was searching for, he purchased $18 tanning injections, and administered two of them before leaving for the airport.

However, at the end of his six-day trip, his complexion was a lot darker than he expected.

Dylan says that looking back, he probably should’ve used only one syringe, but didn’t want to run the risk of bringing the injections through airport security.

“I bought them before to make the most of the sun. I went on the sunbeds a bit before the holiday but didn’t take the injections until just before I left,” he told SWNS.

Sharing his story to TikTok, Dylan said he has been left with permanent physical reminders of the injections, and even experienced a cancer scare as a result.

“The doctors called me an idiot and told me it’s a side effect from the drug, but now I’m stuck with [freckles],” he said.

“I’ve got freckles like I’m in my 50s or 60s. It feels like my skin’s aged.”

The injections contain a lab-made hormone called melanotan II to increase melanin production, but at the cost of lasting skin damage.

Now that Dylan’s excessive tan has faded, he is trying to spread awareness of the dangers of tanning injections, and urging people to do their own research.

“It’s really not worth it. There’s safer ways to tan, like fake tanning,” he said.

“It gave me a wake-up call … It’s a classic case of being 20 and thinking you’re invincible.”

Behind the scenes of Harmony of the Seas’ AquaTheatre

On Harmony of the Sea’s AquaTheatre, aerialist, tight-rope walkers and divers all come together to show off their skills to give a mouth-opening and thrilling performance.

From the audience’s perspective, the show might appear seamless but behind the scenes there are various crews of specialists working in unison to make the show perfect.

Rigging specialists, certified Scuba divers and hydraulic lifts and underwater trap doors all are utilised to make the show happen.

Nick Weir the VP of Entertainment for the Royal Caribbean International explained in the video that being backstage for any play in the world allows you to witness the “controlled chaos” that makes the show happen.

“You take that now into a different environment, you take that into the AquaTheatre where we are dealing with aerial work and sub-aqua work and the whole thing becomes a totally new dimension,” said Nick.

Alex Williams the stage and production manager of the AquaTheatre described the complexity of the shows in the AquaTheatre.

“During the show, we have three individual stage platforms that move up and down independently… We have rigging specialist who do the performer flying, we have aquatic stage staff who have the open water PADI certification, they are under water and they’re talking to me throughout the whole show,” Alex explained.

“The only way that these shows function is an incredible level of trust and skill between everybody involved. Everybody has to be on their game 100 per cent every single day, or it just doesn’t work.”

Watch the video above to get a behind the scenes look into the operations and stunts at the AquaTheatre.

Have you ever seen a performance in Harmony of the Seas’ AquaTheatre? ‘Building site’ conditions have cruise passengers fuming

The world's biggest cruise ship has been labelled a floating "building site" by furious passengers on its first voyage.

Harmony of the Seas, which cost US$1 billion (AU$1.5 billion) to make, embarked on a four-night "pre-inaugural" cruise from Southampton in England on May 22, ahead of its official maiden voyage to Barcelona, Spain on May 29.

But some of the approximately 6000 passengers onboard the initial sailing have slammed operator Royal Caribbean, saying the ship was "dangerous" and a "building site".

Matthew Wickens of Lancing, West Sussex told the Mirror he paid £1100 (AU$2405) to take his wife and daughter on the cruise to Rotterdam that was not fit to set sail.

"People were walking around getting covered in black soot and it was even landing on their dinner," he said.

"We were told everything was ready but the waterslides and the waterpark were not working.

"I spoke to some people and they found metal shards in the kid's water zone. It was dangerous.

"There was no hot water and it took the best part of three days to get the showers fixed."

Wickens said passengers were compensated with an envelope left on their bed containing a 20 per cent discount off their next cruise, which had to be used within a year.

David Mitchell, a former hotel manager, told the Telegraph: "It was totally chaotic – they were overwhelmed and under-prepared. There were workmen crawling all over and lots of the features and amenities were closed."

The 73-year-old, who has polio, said he suffered a "nasty fall" as he walked through an unfinished door.

"In front of the door was a trough, about four inches deep and I just didn't see it. I fell down and luckily there was carpet but it really shook me up."

Other passengers shared images of the problem-hit Harmony of the Seas on social media, showing overflowing urinals, wet paint and missing safety glass panels.

One went so far as to describe the ship: "Calamity of the Seas".

A Royal Caribbean spokeswoman told the Telegraph passengers on the initial trip had been offered discounted tickets to "allow for any finishing touches that were being made on the ship before the official maiden voyage."

"Royal Caribbean can assure its passengers that the incidents reported have been isolated incidents, most occurring more than four days ago and they were all immediately dealt with," she said.

"The ship has been cleared for operations and the majority of her features are being enjoyed by guests. Royal Caribbean will continue to monitor the safeguarding of the ship to ensure that passengers are safe at all times."

The "vast majority" of guests on the pre-inaugural sailing had returned home "very happy" with their holiday on Harmony of the Seas, the spokeswoman said.

Have you ever encountered a problem like this on a cruise?

Let us know in the comments.

First appeared on Stuff.co.nz.

Related links:

14 candid photos show what a cruise is really like

Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas in numbers

World’s largest cruise ship to get a sister

Inside the largest cruise ship ever built

It's 362-metres long, cost US$1 billion to make, can carry 6780 guests and 2100 crew, and took more than two-and-a-half years to construct. The mammoth Harmony of the Seas arrived at Southampton ahead of its maiden voyage.

The Royal Caribbean ship boasts 20 restaurants but who cares about food when you have a 10-storey water slide on board? The slide, aptly named The Ultimate Abyss, features a 30m drop, making it the tallest at sea.

The water slide is one of many features aboard the beautifully gigantic Harmony. It even has its own park, which contains 10,587 plants, 48 vine plants and 52 trees, while a total of 11,252 works of art are showcased across the vessel.

Harmony is built on the same platform as Royal Caribbean's giant Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, the current size leaders in the cruise world, but it eclipses its siblings by nearly 1700 tons and offers a number of new features.

Stuart Leven, managing director UK and Ireland, Royal Caribbean International, said: "Cruising is changing - it's becoming a holiday for all the family, it's not just white tablecloths and ties at dinnertime - now the sort of holiday you get at all-inclusive resorts on land can be replicated on the seas.

"We have a 10-storey slide, surf machines, plenty of restaurants like Jamie Oliver's Italian on board, a great choice, and you can wake up with a different view from your balcony each day.

"My favourite facility is the robotic bartenders where you go in with an iPad to place your order and they will mix your cocktail. We are really pushing the boundaries.

"It's all about variety - when you have a ship of this scale, you can offer so many things."

Harmony also has larger cabins than Oasis and Allure in some categories, and windowless "inside" cabins are being outfitted with Royal Caribbean's exclusive Virtual Balconies, which offer a real-time view of the outdoors. It's a concept that first debuted in 2014 on the line's Navigator of the Seas.

Wider than Oasis and Allure by about 5.5m and a tad longer, too, Harmony holds nearly 100 more passengers than its sisters at double occupancy.

Harmony's first voyage with paying passengers is scheduled for May 22 out of Southampton, England. After an initial series of cruises in Europe, it will move to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to offer alternating, seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean voyages.

With this new addition, Royal Caribbean will have 25 ships.

Have you ever cruised with Royal Caribbean? World’s largest cruise ship to get a sister

The new world's largest cruise ship, Harmony of the Seas, will be getting another sister in 2021.

Royal Caribbean announced it has signed a memorandum of understanding with the STX France shipyard to build a fifth Oasis class vessel for delivery in the spring of that year.

Harmony is the third ship in the Oasis class series. The first two Oasis class ships, Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, debuted in 2009 and 2010, respectively.

A fourth Oasis class vessel already is on order for delivery in 2018.

While the vessels share the same basic layout, Royal Caribbean made changes to the design in advance of Harmony's construction that resulted in a bigger footprint.

Harmony is nearly three feet wider than its sisters and a tad longer, too. It measures a record 226,963 tons, nearly 1,700 more than Oasis and Allure.

Royal Caribbean didn't say whether the newly ordered Oasis class ship would be even bigger than Harmony or if it would offer new attractions.

Harmony has a number of features that aren't on Oasis and Allure. Among them: Ultimate Abyss, which just might be the most thrilling attraction ever conceived for a cruise ship. Comprised of two swirling slides, it drops nine stories from near the top of the vessel down to one of its lowest decks.

Harmony also is home to a Bionic Bar where the drinks are served by robot bartenders, a concept that first debuted in 2014 on Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas.

In addition, Harmony has larger cabins than Oasis and Allure in some categories, and windowless "inside" cabins are outfitted with Royal Caribbean's exclusive Virtual Balconies, which offer a real-time view of the outdoors.

It's a concept that first debuted in 2014 on the line's Navigator of the Seas.

Harmony holds nearly 100 more passengers than Oasis and Allure at double occupancy. Its total capacity is 6,780 people, not including crew, a new record for the cruise industry.

Have you ever cruised with Royal Caribbean, and how did you find the experience? Concert shows women in perfect harmony

The love for what they do is clear to see when the Manawatu Overtones sing.

The Palmerston North group of 30 female barbershop singers have created a combined concert which will see them sharing the stage with all-female groups, the Wellington City Chorus, He Tangata-New Zealand Show Chorus and Revelry.

Overtones member Jenni Masters said it would be a fantastic celebration of barbershop singing.

"It's the wonderful feeling that you get when you're singing in four-part harmonies. It's like surround sound."

Founding member Sylvia Fountain, who was part of the original seven women who started the group 11 years ago, agreed.

"It's the buzz that comes from not having an instrument to lean on and it's all about the voice."

"We started off just meeting in one of our member's houses and as we grew we eventually started to rehearse at the Milson Church Hall."

The barbershop group is affiliated with the Sweet Adelines, a worldwide organisation of female singers committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education and performance.

The whole organisation is really education based, Fountain said.

"When people join they can't expect to remain the same singer that they did when they first met us. There's a lot of technique and we are always learning."

The repertoire of songs the group will be singing on the night are "fun, favourites" one of the groups director's, Liz Watts, said.

"We have a Chicago medley, which is from the old song Chicago, that one is a lot of fun", tenor Chris Thompson said.

"[I] can't stay still for that one."

The programme will also include songs from ABBA, the Beatles, Dean Martin and Michael Buble and member Faye Roberts said the groups showmanship and friendships would also be on display.

"One of the great things about the group is that we all come from all different walks of life but it is the camaraderie that we have when we meet together. It's a great group."

World on a String will be held at Palmerston North's Speirs Centre on October 31.

Image credit: Facebook / Manawatu Overtures

Written by Carly Thomas.
